August 21st : Responsorial PsalmPsalm 107:2–3, 4–5, 6–7, 8–9 (R. 1)

August 21st :  Responsorial Psalm

Psalm 107:2–3, 4–5, 6–7, 8–9 (R. 1)

Response : O give thanks to the Lord for he is good; for his mercy endures forever!

Let the redeemed of the Lord say this, those he redeemed from the hand of the foe, and gathered from far-off lands, from east and west, north and south.

R.: O give thanks to the Lord for he is good; for his mercy endures forever!

They wandered in a barren desert, finding no way to a city they could dwell in. Hungry they were and thirsty; their soul was fainting within them.

R. : O give thanks to the Lord for he is good; for his mercy endures forever!

Then they cried to the Lord in their need, and he rescued them from their distress, and he guided them along a straight path, to reach a city they could dwell in.

R.: O give thanks to the Lord for he is good; for his mercy endures forever!

Let them thank the Lord for his mercy, his wonders for the children of men; for he satisfies the thirsty soul, and the hungry he fills with good things.

R.: O give thanks to the Lord for he is good; for his mercy endures forever!

Alleluia
V. Alleluia.

R. Alleluia.

V. Teach me your paths, O Lord. Guide me in your truth.

R. Alleluia.

A Reading from the book of the Prophet Ezekiel 37:1–14

In those days: The hand of the Lord was upon me, and he brought me out in the Spirit of the Lord and set me down in the middle of the valley; it was full of bones. And he led me around among them, and behold, there were very many on the surface of the valley, and behold, they were very dry. And he said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” And I answered, “O Lord God, you know.” Then he said to me, “Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord God to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the Lord.” So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I prophesied, there was a sound, and behold, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone. And I looked, and behold, there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them. But there was no breath in them. Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live.” So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived and stood on their feet, an exceedingly great army. Then he said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Behold, they say, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are indeed cut off.’ Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will open your graves and raise you from your graves, O my people. And I will bring you into the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves, and raise you from your graves, O my people. And I will put my Spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I am the Lord; I have spoken, and I will do it, declares the Lord.”

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 22:1–14

At that time: Again Jesus spoke to chief priests and elders of the people, in parables, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son, and sent his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding feast, but they would not come. Again he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “See, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast.” ’ But they paid no attention and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them. The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding feast is ready, but those invited were not worthy. Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding feast as many as you find.’ And those servants went out into the roads and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good. So the wedding hall was filled with guests. “But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment. And he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot and cast him into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ For many are called, but few are chosen.”

August 20th : Responsorial Psalm

Psalm 51:12–13, 14–15, 18–19 (R. Ezekiel 36:25)

Response :  I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses.

Create a pure heart for me, O God; renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from your presence; take not your holy spirit from me.

R.:  I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses

Restore in me the joy of your salvation; sustain in me a willing spirit. I will teach transgressors your ways, that sinners may return to you.

R.:  I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses

For in sacrifice you take no delight; burnt offering from me would not please you. My sacrifice to God, a broken spirit: a broken and humbled heart, O God, you will not spurn.

R.:  I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses

Alleluia
V. Alleluia.

R. Alleluia.

V. Today, harden not your hearts, but listen to the voice of the Lord.

A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Ezekiel 36: 23–28

Thus says the Lord: I will vindicate the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, and which you have profaned among them. And the nations will know that I am the Lord, declares the Lord God, when through you I vindicate my holiness before their eyes. I will take you from the nations and gather you from all the countries and bring you into your own land. I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules. You shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers, and you shall be my people, and I will be your God.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 20:1-16a

At that time: Jesus told his disciples this parable: “For the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house who went out early in the morning to hire labourers for his vineyard. After agreeing with the labourers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And going out about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the market-place, and to them he said, ‘You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give you.’ So they went. Going out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same. And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing. And he said to them, ‘Why do you stand here idle all day?’ They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You go into the vineyard too.’ And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the labourers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first.’ And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius. Now when those hired first came, they thought they would receive more, but each of them also received a denarius. And on receiving it they grumbled at the master of the house, saying, ‘These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’ But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what belongs to you and go. I choose to give to this last worker as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?’ So the last will be first.”

Psalm 23:1–3a, 3b–4, 5, 6 (R. 1)

Response : The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.

The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me repose. Near restful waters he leads me; he revives my soul.

R.: The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.

He guides me along the right path, for the sake of his name. Though I should walk in the valley of the shadow of death, no evil would I fear, for you are with me. Your crook and your staff will give me comfort.

R.: The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.

You have prepared a table before me in the sight of my foes. My head you have anointed with oil; my cup is overflowing.

R.: The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life. In the Lord’s own house shall I dwell for length of days unending.

R.: The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.
