"It was a night's vigil for the Lord, when he brought the children of Israel out of Egypt"
A Reading from the book of Exodus (12, 37-42)
In those days
the children of Israel set out from the city of Ramses
towards Succoth,
numbering about six hundred thousand,
not counting the children.
A disparate multitude accompanied them,
as well as a huge herd of sheep and oxen.
They baked unleavened cakes
with the dough they had brought from Egypt
and which had not risen;
in fact, they had been driven out of Egypt
without having had time to stock up.
The stay of the sons of Israel in Egypt
lasted four hundred and thirty years.
And it's after four hundred and thirty years, it's on this very day
let all the armies of the Lord come out of the land of Egypt.
It was a night's vigil for the Lord,
when he brought the children of Israel out of Egypt;
it must be for them, from generation to generation,
a night's vigil in honor of the Lord.
